Visit the Wachau Valley from Vienna. Located along the Danube, the Wachau valley is known for its excellent wine and for being a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with medieval castles, impressive monasteries, and of course breathtaking landscapes. Travel from Vienna to Krems, a quaint and charming village on the banks of the Danube river. There, take a short walk through the city center then pass Dürnstein where you can get a glimpse of the ruins of Dürnstein castle - where King Richard the Lionheart was held captive - from a nearby hill. Drive down to the village of Spitz where you will board the boat and sail along the Danube river (during summer). Marvel at the gentle hills and green woods while you take in the sights of the quaint riverside villages. Finally, arrive at Melk for the last part of the tour - the Benedictine Abbey. Explore the 'Best Historic Destination of the World', an award the abbey received in 2008. Walk through the marble hall, the library and the church famous for its unique frescoes. The tour ends with transfers back to Vienna State Opera, where you can continue exploring the rest of the city.
